October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (#PinkOctober). According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 15,820 cases of cancers occur annually in Ghana. We at Pepper Dem Ministries sympathize with all who have been affected one way or another by the menace that is Breast Cancer and seek to support educational and awareness creation efforts in tackling this health issue.
We would like to urge all to regularly get screened and examined to know our status. There are a number of free screening exercises being offered particularly in this month of October in various healthcare facilities and programmes and we would like to encourage all to endeavor to get screened. While Breast Cancer commonly affects women, we would like to point out the reality that 1 in 1000 men are likely to be diagnosed with the condition in their lifetime according to the American Cancer Society, making it a serious health concern for all regardless of gender.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), chances of survival range from 40-80% globally when the cancer is detected early. As one of the most treatable forms of cancer, Breast Cancer need not be a death sentence. Early detection is crucial to ensuring survival against cancer.
Let us all pay heed to the education and screening happening this month of October. Prevention is better than cure as the high death rates are often linked to late diagnosis.. Get checked before it is too late for health is wealth.
